Why Professional Painters Make All the Difference

Painting always looks straightforward—roller, tin of paint, job done. But most of the time, what people see as the “painting” is only a small part of it.

A lot of the work I get around Chesterfield, Mansfield, Sheffield, Matlock and surrounding areas is after someone’s had a go themselves or had a rushed job done, and it just hasn’t come out right. Usually comes down to prep and process more than anything.

Here’s where a professional makes the difference.

1. It’s the Prep That Makes the Job

This is the biggest one—by far.

Most issues like:

Peeling paint

Patchy finishes

Lines showing through

Rough walls

All come back to poor prep.

Before any paint goes on, you’re looking at:

Filling and sanding properly

Dealing with old paint or problem areas

Making sure surfaces are sound and smooth

A lot of properties I work on locally—especially older homes—need that bit of extra prep to get a proper finish.

2. The Right Tools (and Knowing How to Use Them)

Anyone can pick up a roller—but getting a proper finish is a different story.

Using the right kit makes a big difference:

Decent brushes for cutting in clean lines

Quality rollers that don’t leave texture or fibres

Trade paints that cover properly and last

I mainly use Valspar Trade, which gives a much better finish and durability compared to standard retail paints. It covers better, levels out nicer, and holds up over time.

It’s not just what you use—it’s knowing how to apply it properly.

3. It’s Usually Rushed (and That’s Where It Goes Wrong)

This is something I see all the time.

Most people doing it themselves are either:

Working to a tight schedule

Trying to squeeze it into evenings or weekends

Or just want it done as quickly as possible

And to be fair—some people just don’t enjoy decorating, so they rush through it to get it over with.

That’s where corners get cut:

Prep gets skipped or rushed

Drying times aren’t followed properly

Second coats don’t go on as they should

I’ve also had situations locally where people have tried to do it themselves and ended up hurting themselves—usually from ladders or overreaching doing ceilings and high areas.

One job that stuck with me was an elderly customer who’d tried to decorate her kitchen and had a fall off her steps while painting above the cupboards. Thankfully she was okay, but it just shows—it’s not always as simple or as safe as it looks.

Sometimes it’s not just about getting a better finish—it’s about avoiding the risk altogether.

4. The Finish Is on Another Level

This is what people notice straight away.

Things like:

Sharp, clean cutting-in lines

Even coverage across walls and ceilings

Smooth finishes on woodwork

Those details are what separate a DIY job from a professional one.

A lot of customers locally say the same thing after—it just looks cleaner, sharper, and properly finished.

5. It Actually Saves Money Long Term

A lot of people try to save money doing it themselves, which makes sense—but if it needs redoing, it ends up costing more.

Common issues I get called out to fix around Chesterfield, Mansfield and Sheffield:

Patchy walls that need re-coating

Paint failing because surfaces weren’t prepped

Marks and roller lines showing through

Getting it done properly first time avoids all that.

Finishing Touch

Painting isn’t just putting colour on a wall—it’s everything that goes into it before and after.

When it’s done right, it lasts, looks clean, and lifts the whole space. When it’s rushed, it shows.
